As artists and illustrators, we know the importance of a Portfolio.

Making a good, "selling" portfolio takes time and practice. But, in my opinion, "MAKE" is the main word.

Only once we start working on the portfolio, will we see what needs to be done, improved, drawn, or changed.

It's an ongoing process, as we can (and should) update our portfolio regularly.

Even if you do not have lots of artwork done, I am sure you can use some of it to start making your portfolio.

I will be sharing a few things here in posts and videos on YouTube about portfolios because I believe figuring out what your portfolio needs to look like to get work is an essential step in our careers.

I am happy to share the knowledge I've gained on this topic.

One of the vital things I've understood with time is that your portfolio is not just a collection of artwork; it's a representation of your brand and your professional identity. Take the time to curate and present your work thoughtfully, and your portfolio will become a powerful tool for showcasing your talents and advancing your career.

I have collected the most common mistakes we all make while working on Portfolio. Let's try to avoid:

  1. Lack of Focus: Your portfolio should have a clear theme or focus. Avoid including too many unrelated styles or subjects, as this can confuse viewers about your expertise. Answer the questions: What work do I want to get with this portfolio? Who will see it? What impression will it make?

  2. Poor Organization: Make sure your portfolio is well-organized and easy to navigate. Use categories or tags to group similar pieces together, and consider including a table of contents for larger portfolios. Use the guide I've shared with you, it will help 😊

  3. Low-Quality Images: Your portfolio is only as strong as the quality of the work you showcase. Use high-resolution images that accurately represent your skills and attention to detail.

  4. Overwhelming Amount of Work: Quality trumps quantity. Include only your best and most relevant pieces in your portfolio. Too many pieces can dilute the impact of your work and make it harder for viewers to focus on your strengths.

  5. Lack of Variety: While it's important to have a focused portfolio, it's also crucial to demonstrate versatility. Include a variety of styles, subjects, and mediums to showcase your range as an illustrator. For children's illustration, we would expect to see locations, characters design (animals, humans of different age and race), etc.

  6. No Context or Story: Providing context or background information for each piece can enhance the viewer's understanding and appreciation of your work. Consider including captions or short descriptions that explain the concept or inspiration behind each piece. It should be interesting to look at your portfolio.

  7. Neglecting Presentation: Presentation matters. Pay attention to the layout, typography, and overall design of your portfolio. A polished and professional presentation can make a strong impression on potential clients or employers.

  8. Ignoring Feedback: Don't be afraid to seek feedback on your portfolio from trusted peers, mentors, or industry professionals. Constructive criticism can help you identify areas for improvement and refine your portfolio over time. Do not be shy to ask for an opinion (even the people who are not in the art industry).

Another thing to share is that your portfolio could also be shared on various social platforms. I am talking about them in detail in this video.
